***a beautiful cake photo used to be in this post but due to the recent lawsuits for using photos on blogs I took it down.***

First off, that photo is a cake. Seriously. I'd almost feel guilty eating it. Almost.

Secondly, my birthday is rapidly approaching and that means it's time to make my birthday list. Said list will consist of novels because really, nothing beats receiving a great book as a gift.

Okay, SOME gifts top a book. Like if you wanted to send me on an all expenses paid vacation (FYI I love cruises) I wouldn't complain. Although for the record, it would be extra thoughtful if you gave me the vacation AND a couple books to read while I'm on the plane, sunbathing, etc.

Anyway, let's have a virtual book birthday party!
*throws confetti and a hundred Happy Birthday balloons appear*

If it's nowhere near your actual birthday, have no fear. You can celebrate a very merry UNbirthday!

Andbutso, if you're attending the virtual birthday bash you must bring a book or two, or three, or four to give as gifts. Something you've read recently that you loved or would recommend, or an upcoming title that you KNOW will be fabulous.

Here are my contributions:

by John Green and David Levithan
(cracked me up and I wished I was friends with the characters. Not to mention it's the first time I ever saw "Andbutso" and I thought it was brilliant.)
THE BODY FINDER by Kimberly Derting
(read it in two sittings because it was a bona fide page turner. And of course, the great romantic relationship only added to its greatness.)

Now, I'm bringing these next books to the party but NO FIGHTING. There will be games such as Pin The Tale on the Donkey, and Twister to decide who gets these hot commodities.

THE CLOCKWORK ANGEL by Cassandra Clare
MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins
*throws elbows* I SAID NO FIGHTING!

Okay, your turn! What books are you bringing? And what's your favorite kind of cake and drink so I know what to stock up on?

  1. I just finished reading, The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan and Me and Mr. Darcy by Alexandra Potter. I'll bring those!

    And Happy Birthday! :)

  2. Happy Birthday!

    I'll bring
    1. The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams, my most favouritest classic fantasy ever,
    2. Magic Bites by Illona Andrews coz it's modern, funny and fascinating, 3. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult because it made me cry and last but not least,
    4. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay because it's eerily good and so much better than the TV show.

Also, I love strawberry cheesecake. And Ginger Ale. And Mojitos. Not necessarily in that order. ; P

    Let's PARTY!!!!

  3. Dianne Salerni's We Hear The Dead!!! and drinks:)

  4. I'll bring Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. I love that book and Alex.

    Happy almost Birthday!

  5. I'll bring "Diamond Willow" by Helen Frost -- a novel in verse about a 12-year-old girl living in interior Alaska. Each page features a bit of the story in diamond-shaped poetry, and each contains a hidden message. Beautiful.

Right now I'm reading Lynne Rae Perkins's "As Easy As Falling Off the Face of the Earth," but I haven't finished it yet, so I won't part with it!

Anything chocolate -- and happy almost-birthday!

  6. I'm bringing Colson Whitehead's "Sag Harbor." I wish I had one-tenth the talent of that man. His writing is unique, funny and inspiring.

The story involves a teenage twin who is learning about himself in a summer resort town and features fantastic characters, situations and description.

It makes you feel like a teen again, but without having the akward experiences yourself.

I second the strawberry cheesecake and mojitos that Tessa Conte mentioned!!

  7. Thanks for the invite. What a fabulous cake! You're bringing some great reads. I'd bring Girlfriend in a Comma by Doug Coupland. Sounds depressing but quite witty and thought provoking. And the characters have been long time friends-perfect for a party.

  8. You didn't tell us it was your birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I guess I'll bring The Help. It was by far the best book I've read this year. (You must read it, even though it's not like your usual books.)

Oh, and I'm totally fighting for Mockingjay!

  9. Happy almost birthday, good lady! I'm bringing vodka and scotch to the party, per your request. Aaannnd lemme see... what books to bring.

    I'll have to go with:

The Old Man and the Sea because it's Hemingway at his absolute finest.
A Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin because I read it before I knew what magical realism was and it floored me absolutely floored me with the loveliness of the language and the aching poignancy of the story.
The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy by Tad Williams, because I have to bring at least one epic fantasy series, and this one's been a favorite of mine for years.

And there we go. *whistles* *pops a few balloons for fun* *sips vodka*

P.S. I'd be TOTALLY missing a chance to pimp my writing if I didn't point out that I've had a soft spot for Twister ever since I got this published --> :)

  10. What a fabulous party!!!

    okay I am bringing:

Devoured by Amanda Marrone (fairytales will never be the same after this one)

Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles (um, a love story that gives you a closure you won't soon forget)

The Dark Divine by Bree Despain (seriously if you don't know I love this one...where have you been? ;o) )

Dark Visions Series by LJ Smith - (just a few years after the Vampire Diaries LJ wrote this one and personally it is one of my faves)

Okay - there are so many more I could list!!!

Oh and I love a vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream between the layers and frosted with a coconut flavored buttercream icing. CHOCOLATE+COCONUT+VANILLA = YUM YUM!

    Visit My Kingdom Anytime

  11. Happy Birthday, Karen! Oh, I don't know if I could eat (certainly not CUT!) that book cake. It is fabulous. For moi, must be chocolat (Belgian, perhaps).
Books: Specially for you. Have you ever read Alice Hoffman's Aquamarine? Or Meredith Ann Pierce's Waters Luminous & Deep? Or Jim Lynch's The Highest Tide? :D
On the non-watery front, I really love Laini Taylor's fairy books.
    What a great party idea!

  12. Ooh, ooh, ooh, I'm so excited to be invited. Please get me CHOCOLATE! Can be anything...cake, candy bars, name it. As for books, I'll contribute two very different stories, one of which is already a classic and other other of which I believe is destined to become one:
    1. Anna Karenina - because it's the most beautiful tragedy I've ever read (and I loves me a good romantic tragedy)!
    2. The Book Thief - just because. It is. Awesome.

Happy Birthday to you! And to all of us ;-)

  13. Oh, someone's already bring Perfect Chemistry. I'll bring the next one in the series, Rules of Attraction. :D

And that's seriously a cake? Wow! My cakes look nothing like that. If they resemble a cake at all, it's a miracle.

  14. That cake is amazing! I love a good party. :) I'm going to bring Princess Academy by Shannon Hale and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

    Happy Almost Birthday!

  15. Happy early Birthday, Karen!!!

I'm bringing Weird Pennsylvania because the "Weird" stories is super cool, and also The Book of Lies: History's Greatest Fakes, Frauds, Schemes, and Scams. Two books to get the party discussion going!

I love chocolate cake with chocolate icing!

  16. *hands out party hats while topping off drinks*

Nice to see all of you. Thanks for coming. Help yourself to cake.

Tricia, I have read Alice. (She's one of my fav authors--even if she loses it in public once in awhile.) But I haven't read the other ones you brought, so thanks for bringing them to the party.

You all have such fabulous books with you! This is an incredible party if I do say so myself. Of course, I owe it to all my VIP guests. ;)

    Time to set up Twister!

  17. Oh, fun! I'm going to bring The Scorch Trials by James Dashner and my whole Fablehaven collection and the Inkheart Trilogy! *sigh*

  18. Swordspoint --by Ellen Kushner

    Changling --by Delia Sherman

    Happy Birthday!

  19. Can we play musical chairs? I'm pretty good at that, and twister gets tricky for us not-so-flexible 40-somethings!

  20. Too many good books to choose from, but in the spirit of travel, I'd like to bring Franz Wisner's memoir "Honeymoon with my Brother." Loved that book!

  21. So this means you're a Gemini?
Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, or better yet, a home-made German chocolate cake!
I'll bring OD MAGIC by Patricia McKilip, THE ARKADIANS by Lloyd Alexander, and THE DARK IS RISING quartet by Susan Cooper.

  22. Wendy- Of course we can play musical chairs! Ask and ye shall receive. :)

Kathryn- Yes I am a Gemini. My evil twin is around here somewhere triple-spiking the punch and hiding all the chocolate cake for herself. I'm sorry. I tried not to invite her, but she follows me everywhere ;)

  23. How fun! Things not Seen by... I can't remember the author! And The Dark Divine by Bree Despain. Someone else is bringing it, but it's a popular book!!

I NEED to read the Bodyfinder. Happy bday!!

  24. Fun!! I'll bring The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. And as far as cake goes, yellow cake with chocolate frosting rocks my world!

    (early) Happy Birthday!

  25. ...How rude of me! I forgot to mention the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo is Stieg Larsson. *blush*

  26. Happy early birthday! And I'd bring, the newest Morganville Vampires novel, If I Stay, and whatever other books I grab from my unread book box.

  27. I'll bring the Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King because I'm so digging it. Also, my fave drink is the mojito.

    Happy Virtual Birthday!

  28. I'm honored to be invited to such a wonderous occassion! Truly spoiled I am! Happy soon-to-be birthday to you, and a very merry unbirthday to me!!!

What shall I bring, well I agree with your choice of The Body Finder and the few I'd like to add to the list would be:

    Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
    Heist Society by Ally Carter
Prada and Prejudice by Mandy Hubbard

That cake looks awesome by the way!! I remember watching Cake Affairs and they made the Hogwarts castle!!! It was A-M-A-ZING!!!!

  29. OMGoodness you invited me to your party...I'll bet you invited me because I'm over twenty-one. (wink)

Have a great birthday, Karen. :)

  30. Thanks for pointing out my major typo. Ouch!

  31. *waving* Hi again. I had to run out and find one of my all-time favorite sea books. I don't know how I could've forgotten The Changeling Sea by Patricia A. McKillip. It's a tiny book that will sail you to a magic place.

  32. This is a great party!!! I love it.

By the way I posted a blurb about you on my blog today... ;o)

*brings cup of punch to lips and sips the sweet flavor of fruit and.....*

Did someone spike this punch??? SIMON!!!!

    Visit My Kingdom Anytime

  33. Wow, this is a rockin' party! I'm bringing The Adoration of Jenna Fox and The Giver. Yeah, I like me some dystopian.

And I like chocolate cake and ginger ale. I mean, seriously. Is there anything better?

    Happy almost birthday!

  34. Love UNbirthday party because you have the benefit of NOT getting older!

So Sisters Grimm is there, Mockingjay for sure, and the last Fablehaven (that's so long it counts as 2 right?) ;)

  35. Love a good party! Happy early birthday!!!! I'm snatching up MockingJay the second I see it! I'll bring a copy of The Book Thief. Best. Book. Ever.

  36. Wheee! I found you just in time for the party! So Excited! I like brownies with walnuts served warm with vanilla ice cream..... mmmmm (excuse me while I go clean up the drool that has accumulated on my chin)

As for books, I'm totally bringing the Gregor the Overlander series by Suzanne Collins. If you like Hunger Games, you will absolutely adore these! I think I like them a little bit better.

And I will bring The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. My absolute favorite book I read last year.

And also I will bring The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey because I think that her books and that series in particular are sadly overlooked.

Whee! *throws confetti* *drinks punch* Courtney, I think you're right - someone definitely spiked this!

  37. What a fantastic cake! Happy Almost Birthday, dear girl. :) I'll bring `The Girl with Glass Feet' by Ali Shaw, which I recently read and thoroughly enjoyed. I'll also bring some sparkles. Love & bright wishes. xx

  38. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is the Book I'm bringing because I loved this book so much! I am also bringing The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett. It is a beautiful story told in beautiful imagery.

Thanks to everyone for making this such an awesome shindig. :)I've added many of your books to my birthday and TBR list.

  43. Since I'm super late to the party, is it your birthday yet???!!! I didn't miss it at your meetup, did I?
    Happy Birthday!
I have to bring, of course, The Book Thief. :-)

  44. Oh, happy birthday, girlie!!!! I hope it's fabulous!!

And to your party, I'm bringing The Forest of Hands and Teeth and the The Order of the Phoenix :)
