"I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living."As promised, here is a photo that foretold I would someday write a story about mermaids. Me at age two...
— Anaïs Nin
Seawees were so cool. So was my parents striped couch and my brother's cute matching short and tank set. That's my sweet grandmother looking on in the background. I also loved Care Bears, My Little Pony, Glow Worms, and Teddy Ruxpin. Hmm, I wonder if that gives any indication of what novels may manifest in my future.
Anyway, back to mermaids.
Me at age 21 (maybe 22. I can't remember) with the most popular mermaid of them all...
I was trying to pose like her, but I couldn't get my hair to whoosh up in the air like hers. That's my beautiful and supportive mother on the other side of Ariel. You too can pose with this statue if you cruise on the Disney Wonder.
I kept my promise, those are my pics. No lengthy post today, nothing exciting to update about, I'm just having fun splashing around with old photos and sharing with all you great blogging friends.
I hope the waters are fine, because the photos certainly are. You were meant to write it.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're writing about mermaids. Very cool. Great photos, by the way.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I left a little something for you on my blog. You have one already, but you were worth mentioning ;) http://bit.ly/7PWQT2
Those photos are so sweet! Especially you as a little 'un :)
ReplyDeleteI think you must have been a mermaid in a former life... And your pants are awesome!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute! Let me know if you ever start writing about milti-color ponies and bears. I'll need to make a time machine to steal the faeries and rodeo horses from my former self. I can't see either fitting in my current WIP. :)
ReplyDeleteVery serendipity-ish.
ReplyDeleteI loved Mt Little Pony and Aladdin. How magical would a magic carpet ride be?
ReplyDeleteNice photos and I have to ask, how is The Kindrily coming along?
I love the Little Mermaid!
ReplyDeleteAdorable.
ReplyDeleteThe best advice is always write what you know and love - conveying your childhood love of mermaids should make the challenge easier.
Awww, your little two year old face is so cute. :-) And you had gorgeous hair! Thanks for sharing the pics. :-)
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing your smile everywhere I post, and now I just saw your award at Bethany's. It's time I hopped over to make friends!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the purple dragon, and I just want to slurp up that coffee! yum! ;-)
Such a cutie at age 2 and what a knockout at 21! What happened? lol Obviously I'm teasing, cause you are absolutely beautiful and you know it! :) Don't mind me, haven't had much sleep and I can be a bit of a joker when I'm exhausted. xo
ReplyDeleteFlames on the pants awesomeness!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous girl, what a lovely post! Stay true to your dreams and enjoy the magic. xx
ReplyDeleteOh, my gosh! I used to LOVE the Seawees!! I forgot all about them.
ReplyDeleteI saw your comment over at Natalie Bahm's blog. I think that's funny how your friend asked "It's not about vampires is it." It also makes me sad, because my own novel (which I started before the vampire craze hit) does have vampires, but now I don't have much hope for it because of the oversaturation of vampire novels in the market now :(
ReplyDeleteOh and P.S. I like your blog! :)
You are just lovely! Passion like that really shows in your writing.
ReplyDeleteI think you would need a lot of hair gel to get your hair to stand up like that. Wicked pants!
ReplyDeleteThis just reminded me of a discussion I was having with a co-worker the other day. The major park in our city sits on a peninsula that leads into the downtown core. (Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC). I drive through the causeway each day on the way to work, but a couple of weeks ago, instead of going through the causeway, I took the scenic route through the entire park. (Was I late for work? Yes. Deal with it people.)
ReplyDeleteThe road runs alongside large stretches of rocky beaches. One of these beaches has a life-size bronze sculpture of a woman in a scuba-outfit sitting on a large rock. It has been there for a long time, it's landmark and considered sacred in the sense that no-one would ever think of defacing her or vandalizing her. (From time to time, someone will put a leigh of flowers around her neck which looks quote lovely. When the tide comes up she is fully immersed under the water. It's really quite lovely.
When I was young and we would drive past the sculpture, my Mom would say, "Look for the mermaid. Look for the mermaid!"
On my leisurely commute that day, I saw her half immersed in the water and it made me smile. When I got to work I told a co-worker about my drive-in and asked if she had ever seen the scuba-diver sculpture. She said, "It's not a scuba diver. She's a mermaid". I said, "No she's a scuba diver, she only looks like a mermaid." This went back and forth for awhile until I was no longer sure of what she was. Maybe she was a mermaid? Maybe other people saw something different? Maybe she really did transform when the tide came up. Maybe we were both right. After all, that's what mermaids and sirens do, right? They confuse us and transform before our eyes. (I'll see if I can find a photo of her and post it on my site.)It was kind of magical to think my co-worker and I could have both been right.
Thanks for letting my mind wander off a little this morning. Have a great weekend! - G
