VIRTUAL BIRTHDAY BOOK PARTY!

***a beautiful cake photo used to be in this post but due to the recent lawsuits for using photos on blogs I took it down.***

First off, that photo is a cake. Seriously. I'd almost feel guilty eating it. Almost.

Secondly, my birthday is rapidly approaching and that means it's time to make my birthday list. Said list will consist of novels because really, nothing beats receiving a great book as a gift.

Okay, SOME gifts top a book. Like if you wanted to send me on an all expenses paid vacation (FYI I love cruises) I wouldn't complain. Although for the record, it would be extra thoughtful if you gave me the vacation AND a couple books to read while I'm on the plane, sunbathing, etc.

Anyway, let's have a virtual book birthday party!
*throws confetti and a hundred Happy Birthday balloons appear*

If it's nowhere near your actual birthday, have no fear. You can celebrate a very merry UNbirthday!

Andbutso, if you're attending the virtual birthday bash you must bring a book or two, or three, or four to give as gifts. Something you've read recently that you loved or would recommend, or an upcoming title that you KNOW will be fabulous.

Here are my contributions:

WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON
by John Green and David Levithan
(cracked me up and I wished I was friends with the characters. Not to mention it's the first time I ever saw "Andbutso" and I thought it was brilliant.)
THE BODY FINDER by Kimberly Derting
(read it in two sittings because it was a bona fide page turner. And of course, the great romantic relationship only added to its greatness.)

Now, I'm bringing these next books to the party but NO FIGHTING. There will be games such as Pin The Tale on the Donkey, and Twister to decide who gets these hot commodities.

THE CLOCKWORK ANGEL by Cassandra Clare
MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins
*throws elbows* I SAID NO FIGHTING!

Okay, your turn! What books are you bringing? And what's your favorite kind of cake and drink so I know what to stock up on?

  2. Happy Birthday!

    I'll bring
    1. The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams, my most favouritest classic fantasy ever,
    2. Magic Bites by Illona Andrews coz it's modern, funny and fascinating, 3. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult because it made me cry and last but not least,
    4. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay because it's eerily good and so much better than the TV show.

Also, I love strawberry cheesecake. And Ginger Ale. And Mojitos. Not necessarily in that order. ; P

    Let's PARTY!!!!

  3. Dianne Salerni's We Hear The Dead!!! and drinks:)

  4. I'll bring Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles. I love that book and Alex.

    Happy almost Birthday!

  5. I'm bringing Colson Whitehead's "Sag Harbor." I wish I had one-tenth the talent of that man. His writing is unique, funny and inspiring.

The story involves a teenage twin who is learning about himself in a summer resort town and features fantastic characters, situations and description.

It makes you feel like a teen again, but without having the akward experiences yourself.

I second the strawberry cheesecake and mojitos that Tessa Conte mentioned!!

  6. Thanks for the invite. What a fabulous cake! You're bringing some great reads. I'd bring Girlfriend in a Comma by Doug Coupland. Sounds depressing but quite witty and thought provoking. And the characters have been long time friends-perfect for a party.

  7. You didn't tell us it was your birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I guess I'll bring The Help. It was by far the best book I've read this year. (You must read it, even though it's not like your usual books.)

Oh, and I'm totally fighting for Mockingjay!

  8. Happy almost birthday, good lady! I'm bringing vodka and scotch to the party, per your request. Aaannnd lemme see... what books to bring.

    I'll have to go with:

The Old Man and the Sea because it's Hemingway at his absolute finest.
A Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin because I read it before I knew what magical realism was and it floored me absolutely floored me with the loveliness of the language and the aching poignancy of the story.
The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy by Tad Williams, because I have to bring at least one epic fantasy series, and this one's been a favorite of mine for years.

And there we go. *whistles* *pops a few balloons for fun* *sips vodka*

P.S. I'd be TOTALLY missing a chance to pimp my writing if I didn't point out that I've had a soft spot for Twister ever since I got this published --> http://www.percontra.net/16larter.htm :)

Dark Visions Series by LJ Smith - (just a few years after the Vampire Diaries LJ wrote this one and personally it is one of my faves)

Okay - there are so many more I could list!!!

Oh and I love a vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream between the layers and frosted with a coconut flavored buttercream icing. CHOCOLATE+COCONUT+VANILLA = YUM YUM!

  10. Happy Birthday, Karen! Oh, I don't know if I could eat (certainly not CUT!) that book cake. It is fabulous. For moi, must be chocolat (Belgian, perhaps).
Books: Specially for you. Have you ever read Alice Hoffman's Aquamarine? Or Meredith Ann Pierce's Waters Luminous & Deep? Or Jim Lynch's The Highest Tide? :D
On the non-watery front, I really love Laini Taylor's fairy books.
    What a great party idea!

  11. Ooh, ooh, ooh, I'm so excited to be invited. Please get me CHOCOLATE! Can be anything...cake, candy bars, fondue...you name it. As for books, I'll contribute two very different stories, one of which is already a classic and other other of which I believe is destined to become one:
    1. Anna Karenina - because it's the most beautiful tragedy I've ever read (and I loves me a good romantic tragedy)!
    2. The Book Thief - just because. It is. Awesome.

Happy Birthday to you! And to all of us ;-)

  12. Oh, someone's already bring Perfect Chemistry. I'll bring the next one in the series, Rules of Attraction. :D

And that's seriously a cake? Wow! My cakes look nothing like that. If they resemble a cake at all, it's a miracle.

Nice to see all of you. Thanks for coming. Help yourself to cake.

Tricia, I have read Alice. (She's one of my fav authors--even if she loses it in public once in awhile.) But I haven't read the other ones you brought, so thanks for bringing them to the party.

You all have such fabulous books with you! This is an incredible party if I do say so myself. Of course, I owe it to all my VIP guests. ;)

    Time to set up Twister!

  17. Swordspoint --by Ellen Kushner

    Changling --by Delia Sherman

    Happy Birthday!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can we play musical chairs? I'm pretty good at that, and twister gets tricky for us not-so-flexible 40-somethings!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Too many good books to choose from, but in the spirit of travel, I'd like to bring Franz Wisner's memoir "Honeymoon with my Brother." Loved that book!

And I will bring The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. My absolute favorite book I read last year.
