EDITING IS VERY IMPOTENT

My brain is swollen from editing. I would blog about my progress, but I've used up all of my creative oomph for the day and I worry my eyes are no longer able to catch any glaring errors I might type. Instead, I will let my new favorite sage, Taylor Mali, entertain you with a message about the importance of proofreading.

*Warning: If young and impressionable children are within hearing range, you may want to watch this later. Some lines are rated PG-13. Maybe R. I don't know what the guidelines are these days.*

I know. I heart him too.

What's the most funny or embarrassing mistake you've made in your writing because you didn't proofread thoroughly? You may also list non-personal examples.

  2. Oh, and for my example...I'm a journalist. When I was in college, I took a copyediting class. I was one of the best students in it (not just saying that - my prof told me, and I knew because my grades were always high in a class that was notoriously difficult). Anyway, on one of our assignments I proofed perfectly and came up with a wonderful headline - the prof said I would have gotten an A+, except that I didn't notice CHICAGO was misspelled in the dateline. Automatic F. Nice. (Fortunately, we could resubmit assignments and get an average of the grades, so I ended up with a C for that assignment!)

  3. haha! I remember last semester I typed my teachers name wrong, her name is Fanny and I put Franny (to me Fanny seems like the spelling mistake ha). Anyways, as expected, she wasn't happy and this was the first assignment of the semester so every assignment and test in she would take EXTRA care to mark my papers and find little mistakes my hours of proofreading couldn't possibly catch. For example Where I would put her full name and "Professor" in front, and my friend would just simply put her name, on my paper she would tell me I needed to put "Dr." instead of "professor", and my friend got no such treatment. Lesson learnt: professors.. urg sorry DR.'s, would prefer you spelt their names correctly on University level papers. Who knew?

  4. Hey Karen, I've just published my second novel and ALMOST sent it to press with the misspelling of a friend's last name in the acknowledgments. I found it during the first round of corrections (thank you God!), and all's well that ends well. BTW, love the title of your blog.

  6. One time, in my doctor's office, I wrote that the patient had a "Horse" voice in a patient's chart instead of Hoarse...

I must have been in “la la land”or something, cuz I obviously know the difference. I was very embarrassed when my boss pulled me aside to show me lol

  7. Well, you've probably read a lot of mine.

The worst was writing something wrong on the board when teaching. The students loved to point it 500 times, even after it had been corrected.

  8. Lol that was relentlessly funny.

I have this fantastic little book called "Blackboard Blunders", it's really funny. You should check it out. Although it is about young children's innocent spelling mistakes, it still makes brilliant reading. :D

  9. One of the Gore daughters wrote a novel where the character was always making embarrassing typos in her work e-mails. Like leaving the L out of public. That one has stuck with me.

  12. Haha.. I love that! And there are too many silly mistakes I've made to list them here. You know, unless you want to make a whole blog post titled: Kim's silly, embarrassing mistakes that could have be avoided if she, I don't know, read what she wrote. Or... had super powers.

Haha! Yeah, we all make mistakes... it happens. : )

  16. Editing sucks my brain, too! Once I wrote UPS instead of UPA: United Postal Service instead of United Planets in Action. Can you imagine a UPS truck in outer space?

  17. My favorite typo ever was when I was working retail. The store manager got a memo from coporate that said there would be a mandatory meeting at the whorehouse. Epic typo. Still makes me giggle.

  19. Funny stuff!

I'm thinking my most embarrassing momment was a twitter (a tweet???) to Nathan Bransford with a typo. I learned my lesson. I only use words I am SHURE I can spell on Twitter....

  20. ROFL! I did the usual, ONCE, mispelled the name of an agent I was querying. GAK.

  21. I love your opening line. "Swollen" is exactly how my brain feels when I'm editing.

  22. I'm always embarrassed when crit partners find a mispelling with the red squiggle underneath. lol
Planning a post about that. Heh.

Hope your editing goes amazingly well!

  23. Oh, I've done a lot of embarrassing things. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I've sent emails to my agent that say "Shut up!" So that's kind of embarrassing in hindsight.

Good luck with your edit brain!

  24. Thanks for sharing this hilarious video. Just last night my mum was reading one of my chapters and found "no one entered or excited the city gates" which just goes to show how very very important proof reading is, particularly through the eyes of a second party, no matter how laugh-out-loud or embarrassing it may be.

  25. That's one awesome video!

Can't think of any specific examples now, but I did make a few mistakes when I was teaching. Wrote something wrong on the board one time(like Megan) and the kids would not let me forget it.

  26. Yesterday I comment on someone's FB profile, "Thanks for adding me is a fiend." LOL!

  28. Oh, I have a lot of proofreading oopsies. One of the absolute worst was when I spelled 'of'... 'ov'. Yes, with a v. But it made perfect sense at the time! I think I made that error about twenty times before I finally pondered over it and figured out my mistake. Doh. But it's English's fault for being such a dumb, un-phonetic language, so there.

  29. I used to be the assistant to the director of finance at a major museum and every time I wrote finance, I left the second 'n' out: FINACE. Say it out loud - it isn't pretty. Fortunately, I was able to create a macro for Word so it auto corrected for me. :)

  31. OMG, I laughed so hard at this that my husband came in to see what was so hilarious. He cracked up, too.

I once saw a résumé from a gentleman seeking "a position in pubic relations."
